Davao del Norte eyes halal tourism, investment in 2026 Malaysia Expo

DAVAO CITY – Davao del Norte Governor Edwin Jubahib said the province is preparing for the upcoming 2026 Malaysia Expo (MYExpo) to promote halal tourism, attract investment, and help local businesses meet halal standards.
In an on-the-spot interview in Davao City, Jubahib said the three-day expo, scheduled for October 16 to 18 this year at the DavNor Gymnasium in Tagum City, will be supported by the Mindanao Development Authority and coordinated with Malaysia.
"This is the first time that Davao del Norte will host an event like this," Jubahib said in a local dialect, adding that the province is stepping up preparations as the event approaches.
Jubahib said the expo could introduce the province and the Davao Region to delegates and visitors from Muslim-majority countries, who may also consider the province as a potential destination for tourism and investment.
"If delegates and visitors from Muslim countries come, they will get to know Davao del Norte and the Davao Region, and they may find places where they would want to invest," Jubahib said.
The governor also said the expo is expected to help local establishments secure halal accreditation. He added that the province plans to assist restaurants, food establishments, slaughter facilities, and other businesses in navigating the accreditation process.
Jubahib emphasized that the province wants to establish clearer procedures and stronger coordination, including the use of Malaysia-recognized halal standards, to make it easier for businesses seeking to become halal-compliant.
Davao del Norte will host the 2026 MYExpo Davao del Norte from Oct. 16 to 18, with the event expected to bring together Malaysian and Philippine investors, government agencies, trade associations, chambers of commerce, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and business leaders.
According to Dailan Muhammad Ravi, general manager of MY Events International, the expo will provide Malaysian companies with a venue to explore new business opportunities in the Davao Region.
He said more than 500 participants are expected to attend the event.
The expo will feature a Halal Food Bazaar, thematic exhibitions, cultural performances, roundtable discussions, and business networking activities, with a focus on healthcare, tourism, and agriculture.
"With Malaysia's exports to the Philippines exceeding RM26 billion, the potential for deeper trade collaboration continues to grow," Ravi said during a coordination meeting last month at the DavNor Capitol's PGO Conference Room.
The 2026 MYExpo Davao del Norte is an offshoot of the three-day royal visit of His Highness Tengku Dato' Setia Putra Al-Haj bin Tengku Azman Shah Al-Haj, a member of the Selangor and Kelantan royal families in Malaysia.
Davao del Norte officials said the upcoming expo is expected to build on the ties established during the royal visit and further strengthen economic and tourism links between Davao del Norte, the Davao Region, and Malaysia.
