PH calls on China to safeguard the welfare of arrested Filipinos and promptly notify Philippine officials

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Thursday, August 13, said it is coordinating with Philippine diplomatic posts in China to verify reports that more than 100 Filipino nationals have been arrested by Chinese authorities.
In a statement, the DFA said it was in close coordination with the Philippine Embassy in Beijing and the country’s Consulates-General in China to determine the circumstances surrounding the arrests, the exact number of Filipinos apprehended, and their current status.
“The Department of Foreign Affairs takes note of the statement issued by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs concerning the arrest of over 100 Filipino nationals in China,” the department said.
The DFA said it would ensure that due process is observed and provide consular assistance to the affected Filipinos as needed.
PH respects China’s immigration laws
The DFA said the Philippines respects China’s sovereign right to enforce its immigration laws, just as it recognizes the right of every state to enforce its laws on foreign nationals within its jurisdiction.
“The Philippines respects China's sovereign right to enforce its immigration laws, as it does the right of every state to enforce its own laws on foreign nationals within its jurisdiction, in accordance with due process and established legal procedure,” the DFA said.
It stressed, however, that such enforcement must be carried out in accordance with due process and established legal procedures.
“At the same time, we call on Chinese authorities to safeguard the welfare of the arrested Filipinos and to promptly notify our Foreign Service Posts of their arrest and detention, consistent with the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations and the 2013 Philippines-China Consular Agreement,” the DFA added.
DFA awaits details on arrests
The DFA’s statement came after the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported the arrest of more than 100 Philippine nationals in China.
The Philippine government has yet to confirm the exact number of Filipinos arrested, as well as the circumstances surrounding the arrests and the alleged immigration violations involved.
The DFA said its ongoing coordination with Philippine diplomatic posts is aimed at establishing the facts and determining the appropriate consular assistance for the affected nationals.
