President Marcos and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos graced the opening of the Presidential Photojournalists Association’s (PPA) photo exhibit documenting key moments of the administration at the Likhang Filipino Exhibition Hall in Pasay City.

Dubbed “In Focus: Marcos Presidency,” the exhibit launched on Thursday, Aug. 13, brings together photographs of the President’s official engagements, interactions with Filipinos, meetings with foreign leaders, and other significant events over the past four years.

The exhibit was organized in celebration of World Photography Day on Aug. 19 and seeks to preserve important images of the presidency while recognizing the role of photojournalists in documenting the country’s history.

The First Couple witnessed the ceremonial unveiling of the exhibit’s title board, a collage of photographs depicting various facets of Marcos’ leadership, before receiving tokens of appreciation from PPA President and former Manila Bulletin photojournalist Noel Pabalate and Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Acting Secretary Dave Gomez.

Marcos received a framed version of the title board’s photo collage, while the First Lady was presented with a crystal podium featuring a 3D photograph of the First Couple.

The President and the First Lady later joined PPA members for a photo opportunity before touring the exhibit with Gomez and Pabalate.

The title board was designed by PPA officer Marianne Bermudez of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, with the newspaper-style layout created by graphic artist Oteph Antipolo and the concept developed by Pabalate.

Pabalate said the exhibit also seeks to underscore the continuing importance of professional photojournalism amid the rapid growth of artificial intelligence and social media.

“We feel that we are endangered in this field kasi maraming AI (because of the abundance of AI), social media,” Pabalate said, adding that the exhibit aims to show that professional photographers can provide images that differ from those commonly posted by netizens.

He said the photographs also provide the public with a visual record of government initiatives and the President’s efforts to address the country’s challenges.

The exhibit features the work of Pabalate; Mark Louis Balmores and Santi San Juan of Manila Bulletin; Kriz John Rosales and John Ryan Baldemor of The Philippine Star; Alfredo Vicoy formerly of Manila Bulletin; Niño Jesus Orbeta of the Philippine Daily Inquirer; Jonathan Sulit of Abante; Renato Dilan and Michelle Mike Alquinto of The Manila Times; Marianita “Jack” Burgos of Police Files; Revoli Cortez of Manila Standard; and Yummie Dingding and Jose Aurelio Lozano of Daily Tribune.

Founded in 1986, the PPA is composed of photojournalists from print and online news organizations accredited to cover presidential engagements and seeks to help preserve the country’s historical record through visual documentation of the presidency.

The exhibit will be open to the public for free from Aug. 14 to 30, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., except Mondays.
