DOH warns of water-borne diseases as flooding hits Ilocos

LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte — The Department of Health (DOH) Ilocos Center for Health Development (CHD) warned residents of rising health risks as enhanced southwest monsoon or “habagat” rains continue to trigger flooding across the region.
DOH Ilocos Regional Director Dr. Helen D. Tobias said emergency response teams, medical personnel, medicines, hygiene kits, and water-purification supplies have been prepositioned in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, and Pangasinan.
Tobias urged residents to be on guard against the so-called “WILD” diseases—Water-borne illnesses, Influenza and other respiratory infections, Leptospirosis, and Dengue—which commonly spread during the rainy season.
She issued a particular warning on leptospirosis, which can be contracted through exposure to flood water contaminated with animal urine.
Residents who wade through floodwaters should immediately wash the exposed body parts with soap and clean water and seek medical attention within 24 to 48 hours, she said.
The DOH also urged residents in flood- and landslide-prone areas to evacuate when ordered and advised families in evacuation centers to drink only safe water, observe proper hygiene, and wear masks in crowded shelters.
The DOH Ilocos Emergency Operations Center remains open 24/7 to coordinate health assistance with local governments and hospitals.
