BAGUIO CITY – The search for the 13 victims of the landslides that struck Barangay Guisad Surong, Baguio City, last Sunday, August 9, has ended. And the final toll was 10 dead and three survivors, according to a report by Mayor Benjamin Magalong, on August 11.

According to Magalong, the heavy overnight rains caused by the southwest monsoon that hit the city and neighboring province of Benguet on Saturday caused the ground to soften, causing landslides near the houses of the victims.

The six family members who were among the victims of the landslides, and who are now at the Cathedral of the Resurrection in Magsaysay, Baguio City, were identified as Precious Ann Abeya, Elijah Aliyah Andres, Jaiden Perry Caluza, Pedro Caluza, Keziah Marie Bulatao, and Baby Zepharrah Jhade Bulatao.

“The loss of 10 lives in the recent landslide is a great pain for our city. My heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who died. No words can ease the pain of losing a family member, especially in such sudden and tragic circumstances. We mourn with every family who waited and hoped during the search, and we sympathize with the grief that is engulfing our community. Our thoughts and prayers remain with them during this very difficult time,” Magalong said in his social media post.

Magalong also expressed his gratitude to the people who immediately offered food, clothing, supplies, and other forms of assistance and to the rescue teams, responders, volunteers, and partner agencies who sacrificed themselves during the past two days of search and retrieval amidst heavy rain.
