Driven by digital fatigue and the desire to disconnect from screens, journaling is finding a renewed place in everyday life, particularly among younger consumers looking for more personal and tactile ways to express themselves. Market Intelo reports that the bullet journaling market is valued at nearly $1 billion and is expected to grow at an annual rate of 6.8 percent, with Asia Pacific holding the largest market share, followed by Europe and the Americas.
The demand extends beyond bullet journals. Research and Markets reports that the paper notebook market is valued at $82.2 billion in 2026, covering notebooks used for education, work, journaling, planning, and creative writing. Among the factors driving the market is the growing interest of Gen Z and millennials in high-end artisan notebooks as both lifestyle pieces and tools for personal wellbeing.
For Filipino artist Belle Johnson, this growing appreciation for physical stationery became the inspiration behind Belle and Paper, a journaling and stationery brand she started after moving to the US.
“I've always loved art, and ever since I was little, it has been my dream to have my own business one day,” she tells Manila Bulletin Lifestyle.

Her love for handwritten letters, painting, and journaling eventually led her to create the kind of journal she could not find herself. Instead of settling for an existing design, she painted her own cover. That first hand-painted journal became the beginning of Belle and Paper.
Since then, Belle has sold hundreds of journals to people around the world, turning her artwork into something people can incorporate into their everyday lives.“My name is Belle, but it also means beauty. My goal has always been simple, to bring a little beauty into someone's day through art and stationery,” she says.
She describes her artistic style as soft, feminine, and inspired by nature. Working primarily with watercolor, oil painting, and digital art, she draws inspiration from flowers, fairy tales, gardens, and quiet places. Her art has also evolved beyond the canvas. She has transformed her paintings into journals, bookmarks, notepads, greeting cards, and other stationery.
“Seeing people actually use my artwork every day has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey,” she says.

Behind the dreamy aesthetic, however, is the reality of building a creative business. Johnson admits that balancing her artistic practice with marketing, social media, packing orders, and answering emails is something she is still learning.
“Creating the product is the easy part for me. Selling it is the hard part,” she says.
The experience has taught her patience, particularly during slow sales. Instead of taking it personally when people admire her work but do not purchase it, she has learned that they may simply not be ready or may not be her customers.
For young creatives hoping to turn their passions into businesses, Johnson keeps her advice simple: “Just start.”
“Don't wait until everything is perfect because you'll probably be waiting forever,” she says.
Today, Belle and Paper is also deeply connected to her personal journey. Looking ahead, Belle is preparing to launch Belle & Paper on Amazon and hopes to work with local coffee shops and bookstores in Clarksville, Tennessee. She also dreams of seeing her artwork displayed in museums and eventually opening a shop where people can browse stationery and feel inspired to create.
As a Filipina artist building her business in the United States, she hopes Belle and Paper can continue to bring creativity, encouragement, and a little beauty to people's everyday lives.
