Alas Women end dry spell vs Vietnam for breakthrough win in SEA V. Cup

Alas Pilipinas finally ended its seven-year long losing streak to Vietnam since 2019 after carving out a 22-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-22 victory to barge into the win column of the 2026 Women’s SEA V. Cup at the Chiang Mai Sports Complex Saturday, Aug. 8.
Entering the game with a 0-4 tally, the Nationals started out flat before delivering an inspired performance in the next three sets thanks to the timely hits of Eya Laure, Alyssa Solomon and Bella Belen.
In the fourth set, Alas almost squandered a 19-13 lead after Vietnam tied the game at 22. There, Belen doused the run to give the Filipina tossers a 23-22 edge which was followed with Laure’s back-to-back points off a crucial kill and a block to seal the match.
Vietnam, bannered by Trần Thị Thanh Thúy, suffered its second straight defeat.
This marked the first-ever win by the Philippines against Vietnam after 15 consecutive losses or since the former’s straight-set triumph in the second leg of the competition’s 2019 edition.
Alas improved to 1-1 and can further boost its podium bid this time when it battles Indonesia this Sunday, Aug. 9, at the same venue.
Vietnam, on the other hand, seeks its first win against first leg champion Thailand.
Laure steered the Taka Minowa-mentored crew with 22 points, while Solomon and Belen backstopped her with 17 and 16 points, respectively. Thea Gagate had also a double-digit scoring with 10 points, thanks to skipper Jia De Guzman’s brilliant playmaking.
Dell Palomata also shone with nine points on five attacks and four blocks. On the other hand, Thúy powered Vietnam with 25 points in a losing cause.
