- KATSEYE leader Sophia Laforteza is taking a temporary break to focus on her mental health, becoming the second member after Manon Bannerman to step away from group activities for health reasons this year.
KATSEYE is facing another unexpected shake-up as leader Sophia Laforteza becomes the second member of the global girl group to step away from activities this year for health reasons.
HYBE x Geffen announced Friday, Aug. 7, that Sophia would temporarily sit out the group’s promotional activities to prioritize her mental health and overall well-being.
The development comes about six months after Manon Bannerman also took a temporary hiatus, with the label saying at the time that she needed to focus on her health and well-being.
Sophia’s case, however, comes with a more detailed explanation from management.
“We are very sorry to share that Sophia will be temporarily unable to participate in upcoming promotional activities,” HYBE x Geffen said in a statement posted on Weverse.
The label said Sophia has been receiving support and, following consultations with medical professionals, was advised to take an extended period of rest and continue receiving care to allow for a full recovery.
“It is imperative that her mental health and wellness are prioritized,” the statement added.
Sophia, who has emerged as one of KATSEYE’s most recognizable members and serves as the group’s leader, acknowledged that stepping away was difficult.
“Making this decision wasn’t easy, but I’m learning that health has to come first,” she said in a message to fans.
She explained that continuing to push herself without taking care of her mind and body could prevent her from doing what she loves in the long run.
The timing makes the announcement particularly significant for KATSEYE, which has been building momentum with major performances and a packed schedule. With Manon still on temporary hiatus, Sophia’s absence means the group will now move forward with four members for its upcoming activities.
HYBE x Geffen said Sophia wanted to continue participating despite her condition, but management chose to prioritize her health, safety and long-term well-being.
The label plans to reassess her condition in September and provide fans with another update.
For Sophia, the break is not a goodbye.
“I promise I’m going to work as hard as I can to get through this, heal properly, and come back stronger,” she told EYEKONS.
