PNP: Heavy rains due to weather disturbances leave 6 dead in Luzon

At least six people died as a result of the onslaught of tropical depression “Maymay” and two other weather disturbances, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said on Thursday, August 6.

Police earlier reported that two eatery kitchen workers died in a landslide in La Trinidad, Benguet. This was confirmed by the Office of Civil Defense which added that two people earlier died in a rockslide in Rodriguez, Rizal on Wednesday, August 5.

PNP spokesman Col. Allen Rae Co said two more casualties were reported by the local police—a 45-year old man who drowned in Luna, La Union and a 54-year old man who also drowned in Alaminos, Pangasinan.

The OCD said a total of 23,946 families composed of 80,633 persons were affected by the three weather disturbances.

Of those affected, a total of 6,929 individuals are staying in 39 evacuation centers.

The evacuees were affected by severe flooding in various areas and the OCD said a total of 83 areas were flooded in Ilocos Region, Central Luzon, Zamboanga Peninsula Region and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region.

Co, for his part, said a total of 877 PNP officers were deployed to respond to the adverse effects of “Maymay” with 10,111 more personnel on standby.
