Senate suspends work on Aug. 6 due to 'Maymay'

Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian on Thursday, Aug. 6, suspended work at the Senate due to heavy rains brought by Tropical Storm Maymay (international name "Kujira") and the Southwest Monsoon.

In an advisory issued Thursday, Senate Secretary Atty. Renato N. Bantug Jr. said Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian ordered the suspension of work in the chamber in view of Memorandum Circular No. 122 issued by the Office of the President on Aug. 5.

The memorandum suspended work in government offices in Metro Manila after forecasts of continued heavy rainfall caused by Tropical Storm Maymay and the enhanced Southwest Monsoon.

Malacañang earlier announced the suspension of classes at all levels and work in government offices in the National Capital Region and several provinces in Luzon, including Ilocos Sur, La Union, Benguet, Pangasinan, Abra, Zambales, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Ilocos Norte, Apayao, Nueva Vizcaya, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Bataan, Pampanga, Bulacan, Rizal, Cavite, Batangas, Laguna, and Occidental Mindoro.

Memorandum Circular No. 122, signed by Executive Secretary Ralph Recto on Wednesday, was issued upon the recommendation of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) due to the threat of continued heavy rainfall associated with Tropical Storm Maymay and the Southwest Monsoon.

Due to this, the public hearing and inquiry in aid of legislation by the Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations and Gender Equality, which was supposed to continue tackling Roblox as well as the Tacloban City shooting incident was cancelled.

The joint hearing of the Senate Committee on Energy and the Committee on Public Services, which will continue discussion on the system loss charge, was also cancelled.
