The government will increase the fuel discount for jeepney and UV Express drivers to P12 per liter starting Aug. 15 as part of efforts to cushion the transport sector from the impact of tensions in the Middle East, Malacañang announced.
The higher discount, ordered by President Marcos, will allow drivers to receive up to P1,800 in fuel discounts per week.
The expanded assistance raises the P10-per-liter fuel discount rolled out in April, which the government said has already benefited more than 93,000 public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers.
According to the Office of the Executive Secretary, the increase was agreed upon during a meeting led by Executive Secretary Ralph Recto with Cabinet officials in Malacañang on Aug. 4.
Officials discussed during the meeting measures to protect the economy, contain price increases, and assist sectors directly affected by the continuing tensions in the Middle East.
Recto also directed the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to ensure that assistance under the UPLIFT program reaches vulnerable sectors, including farmers, fisherfolk, transport and construction workers, and other low-income workers.
“Gaya ng inaasahan, patuloy na nararamdaman ng ating mga kababayan ang epekto ng kaguluhan sa Gitnang Silangan (As expected, our people continue to feel the effects of the conflict in the Middle East),” he said.
“Dapat tuloy ang trabaho, tuloy ang ayuda, at ramdam ng bawat sektor ang presensya at malasakit ng gobyerno (Work and assistance must continue, and every sector must feel the government’s presence and concern),” he added.
In an earlier statement, President Marcos assured sectors affected by global economic challenges that the government would continue providing support.
“Hindi namin iiwanan ang sinuman sa panahon ng krisis na ito, lalo na ang mga naaapektuhan ng transportasyon at agrikultura (We will not leave anyone behind during this crisis, especially those affected in the transport and agriculture sectors),” the President said.
The government has been strengthening interventions for sectors vulnerable to higher fuel prices as tensions in the Middle East continue to put pressure on transportation and other costs.
Among those who attended the Aug. 4 meeting were Budget Secretary Kim de Leon, Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon, Social Welfare Secretary Rex Gatchalian, Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez, Education Secretary Sonny Angara, Health Secretary Jose Pujalte Jr., and Agriculture Undersecretary Roger Navarro
