3 Ilonggo seafarers appeal for repatriation after Black Sea attack

ILOILO CITY – Three Ilonggo seafarers appealed to the government to bring them back home after surviving a drone attack against their cargo vessel on the Black Sea last July 18 as the Russia-Ukraine war escalated.
The shipping company which owns MV Inase still wants the all-Filipino crew to proceed to Turkey and deliver remaining cargo.
The three Ilonggos are among half of the crew who are against going to Turkey as the cargo vessel has to navigate the Black Sea again.
One of the seafarers directly appealed for help via social media as they are stuck in a port in Romania and scared for their safety.
“Pakitulong po kami na makababa na… Tatawid pa din ng Black Sea at hindi namin alam ang assurance ng safety namin (Help us disembark. We still have to pass by the Black Sea and we don’t know the assurance of our safety),” wrote Ram Cerbo from Miag-ao town, Iloilo province. Cerbo is recovering from his injuries to the face and hand after being burned and hit by debris from the explosion.
Another seafarer is from the town of Dingle while the third is from Iloilo City.
The Public Employment Service Office-Iloilo province has coordinated with the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) after the family of the seafarers sought help.
PESO-Iloilo Province Head Cynthia Dario told Manila Bulletin that the family of the seafarers met OWWA-6 Regional Director James Mendiola on Tuesday, July 28, at the Iloilo Provincial Capitol.
Dario said government officials are contacting the Manila office of the shipping company to address the issue and bring them back home.
