BSP warns against fake solicitations using Diokno's name

The central bank has warned the public against fraudulent online schemes that illegally use the identity of Monetary Board Member Benjamin E. Diokno to solicit donations for fake charitable causes.
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) reported that unauthorized individuals and syndicates have been sending electronic messages under the guise of representing the central bank or its top officials. Targeted victims receive emails and direct messages requesting contributions to alleged non-profit organizations, complete with bank account details for transfers.
In a public advisory, the BSP emphasized that neither the institution nor its officers and employees initiate, organize, or facilitate solicitations for donations, corporate sponsorships, or direct financial assistance for outside charities. Consequently, any communication requesting monetary contributions under its name or that of its board members is fraudulent.
These schemes exploit the high public profile of Diokno, a veteran economist who previously served as the country’s finance secretary and central bank governor. His extensive history in public service—which includes serving as budget secretary across three presidential administrations—makes his name a high-visibility target for financial identity fraud.
The monetary authority advised anyone receiving questionable communications claiming affiliation with the BSP, the Monetary Board, or its officers to verify the authenticity of the messages before responding or transferring funds.
The central bank urged the public to confirm all communications through established institutional channels, such as official public advisories and verified government portals, to avoid falling victim to cyber-enabled financial scams.
