Vice Ganda apology fails to stop calls for MTRCB action

Published Jul 27, 2026 06:54 pm

Fans are refusing to let the issue die down despite Vice Ganda's public apology over the controversial "Memerimar" skit on "It's Showtime," with many now urging the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) to step in over what they describe as a pattern of offensive on-air behavior.

Vice came under fire after a recent episode showed him spitting water on dancer Johaira before joking, "Anong nangyari sa'yo? Bakit nagputik ka?"

The remark was widely criticized online as colorist, while viewers also questioned the act of spitting on a fellow performer for laughs during a noontime program watched by families and children.

Although Vice apologized on-air and acknowledged that the segment had offended viewers, many netizens said the apology was not enough, arguing that similar incidents have happened before.

The backlash has been particularly strong on Reddit, where numerous users claimed the "Memerimar" skits have become increasingly uncomfortable to watch.

"Kung nakatutok kayo sa past weeks, alam niyong palala nang palala yung Memerimar skit to the point na hindi ka na magugulat kung ma-call out sila ng MTRCB," one commenter wrote.

Another viewer said the jokes had crossed the line.

"I watch 'Showtime' at hindi ako natutuwa sa skit nila. Very disappointed sa ganyang mga jokes. Yung bugbog scene with Johaira, I know it's a skit but it happened not just once. Borderline bullying na rin 'yan but masked as a joke."

Others pointed out that children make up a significant portion of the show's audience.

"Di ma-call out ng management? Bakit? Dami nanonood na minor d'yan tapos magtataka tayo balahura mga Pilipino," another user wrote.

Several comments specifically called on the MTRCB to investigate the incident.

"MTRCB is waving," one commenter posted, while another simply said, "Sana ma-MTRCB 'yan."

While many welcomed Vice's apology, others questioned whether it would lead to lasting change.

"Hoping na hindi performative ang pagso-sorry. Kasi baka next time gawin niya ulit," one commenter wrote.

Another added, "Parang lagi naman siyang nagsosorry lang and not trying to be better. Ilang beses na siyang na-call out pero sorry lang lagi niya ginagawa."

Others criticized what they perceived as a lack of personal accountability, noting that Vice used the word "namin" during the apology instead of taking sole responsibility.

"Bakit 'namin'? Ikaw ang gumawa nun," one user commented.

Some also recalled Vice's previous controversies, including the 2013 joke involving veteran broadcaster Jessica Soho and his earlier apology over a blackface scene in one of his films, arguing that the latest issue fits a recurring pattern.

The renewed calls for regulatory action also revived memories of "It's Showtime"'s 12-day suspension in 2023 after the MTRCB found the program in violation of television standards over an "Isip Bata" segment involving Vice and Ion Perez.

For many viewers, the latest controversy has reinforced calls for stronger oversight, with some arguing that repeated apologies should be matched by meaningful changes in the show's content.

As of writing, the MTRCB has yet to issue a statement on whether it will formally review the latest incident.
