'My conscience is clear': Dizon vows to cooperate as NBI probes into Clark's sports complex

Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon said he will cooperate in any investigation that would be conducted in relation to the alleged irregularities in the construction of sports facilities at the New Clark City in Tarlac.
The sports facilities were used during the 2019 Southeast Asian Games and National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) director Melvin Matibag earlier said they already got hold of documents and information indicating possible irregularities, especially on the allegation that there was no bidding conducted and how the contractor was paid.
The facilities were built by a Malaysian private company and Matibag also noted how fast the company was paid and that the more than P10 billion payment was allegedly done through budget insertions at the General Appropriations Act.
Dizon, however, said he is ready to face any question that will be directed at him in relation to the project that was constructed when he was still the head of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority, one of the agencies that allegedly oversaw the project implementation.
“I am confident because my conscience is clear,” said Dizon when asked about the issue after Matibag said the NBI will be investigating it.
“The facilities gave pride to the Southeast Asian Games in 2019 and they were praised by other countries, they were praised by Singapore. This is the first time that we have world class facilities,” he added.
In fact, he said the facilities are still being used by athletes, including students of the National Academy of Sports.
Last week, Matibag announced that they were tipped and provided with documents of alleged irregularities in the construction of the project—an announcement that drew reaction from Sen. Alan Cayetano.
During that time, Cayetano was the chairman of the Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (PHISGOC) which oversaw the country’s hosting of the SEA Games.
The project was hounded by allegations of irregularities, including the more than P50 million worth of cauldron which was used during the opening ceremony.
Dizon, however, said he has nothing to hide since the he was among those charged before and was already cleared by the Office of the Ombudsman in December 2021.
The dismissal of the case was confirmed by the Ombudsman.
