BACOLOD CITY – The Bacolod-Silay Airport in Silay City, Negros Occidental has revived the free temporary accommodation program called “Sleepover sa Paliparan’’ project for stranded passengers.
Police Major Deejay Domingo, chief of the Bacolod-Silay Airport Police Station under the Philippine National Police (PNP) Aviation Security Group, said the initiative was recently relaunched and welcomed its first beneficiary.
The project was revived after Dr. Ramel Uy, president and chief executive officer of K5 News FM Philippines and vice chairman of the Advisory Council on PNP Patrol Plan 2030, donated a new nipa hut dedicated exclusively for the program.
Domingo explained that the airport’s two existing nipa huts are currently being used to house additional personnel assigned following the reactivation of the Negros Island Region (NIR), prompting the temporary suspension of the project until the new facility became available.
Originally planned in 2019, the initiative was delayed by funding constraints and later by the pandemic.
With support from various stakeholders, it was officially launched in 2021 to provide stranded travelers with a safe and comfortable place to rest.
The program primarily benefits vulnerable passengers, including persons with disabilities, pregnant women, children, and senior citizens awaiting their scheduled flights.
The nipa hut can only accommodate a limited number of people but Domingo welcomed the project’s return as it allows airport police to once again extend assistance to travelers in need. “Happy to serve again,” he said.
The Bacolod-Silay Airport Police Station reaffirmed its commitment to delivering responsive, compassionate, and people-centered service while ensuring the safety, comfort, and well-being of airport passengers.
