DAVAO CITY – Responders are still searching for 11 persons who are still missing three days since a landslide and massive flooding hit three provinces in Mindanao.
The number of affected persons in the massive flooding in different parts of the Bangsamoro Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) has now reached over 500,000 people.
Six of the missing persons are from Barangay Tanuman in Jose Abad Santos (JAS) in Davao Occidental following a flash flood on July 10 triggered by continuous heavy rains due to the enhanced southwest monsoon or habagat that affected many parts of Southern Mindanao.
JAS Mayor Jason John Joyce said three fatalities were recovered in the sea.
A report from the Office of Civil Defense in Davao region showed that flashflood totally destroyed 42 houses in JAS.
Davao Occidental was placed under yellow rainfall warning by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) last Friday. The State weather bureau warned of moderate to occasionally heavy rains bringing a high risk of flooding in low-lying areas and landslides in mountainous terrains.
JAS information officer Julie Marie Buen said responders are still searching for the remaining missing persons in the area.
In Lanao del Sur, four persons are still missing three days after a landslide hit Barangay Ngingir in Calanogas, a situational report from the Bangsamoro Rapid Emergency Action on Disaster Incidence (Bangsamoro READi) said.
Seven persons were killed in the landslide that buried houses.
Quick Response Teams (QRTs) of the Bangsamoro READi are still in the area locating the victims.
Responders are also searching for a 70-year-old man who was swept away by a massive flood in Talayan, Maguindanao del Sur on July 8.
Affected residents in the massive flooding has climbed to 103,218 families or at least 500, 000 persons since the flooding started on July 8. The Bangsamoro READi reported that affected families on July 8 were 45, 000 families. Over 5,000 families are still inside evacuation centers as flood water has yet to subside in some areas.
Bangsamoro READi also said that affected families are from 327 barangays in the provinces of Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur, Special Geographic Area-BARMM, and Tawi-Tawi.
Flood and landslide also damaged 147 houses, 33 of which were totally destroyed.
Bangsamoro READi has yet to release the total cost of damage in the region due to flooding and landslides as the Bangsamoro Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (BDRRMC) is still conducting an assessment.
On July 12, the BDRRMC conducted an aerial survey of flooded areas with the Office of Civil Defense and the Philippine Air Force Tactical Operations Group-12 (PAF-TOG 12).
