'Merci beaucoup!' French government honors PCG chief with National Order of Merit

Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan, commandant of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), has received one of France's highest national distinctions in recognition of his role in strengthening maritime cooperation between the Philippines and France.
The PCG said that Gavan received the Ordre national du Mérite (National Order of Merit) in the rank of Officer during a ceremony in Makati City last June 22.
French Ambassador Marie Fontanel, who conferred the award on behalf of the French government, said the decoration recognized Gavan's distinguished public service and his contribution to deepening maritime cooperation between the two countries.
She also cited Gavan’s leadership in advancing the modernization of the PCG, recognizing his efforts to promote maritime security and uphold international law.
In his acceptance speech, Gavan said the honor belonged not only to him but to the entire Coast Guard organization.
“Those of us in uniform understand that recognition is rarely the achievement of one person. Every accomplishment is built upon the work of countless others, leaders who came before us, colleagues who stand beside us, and personnel who quietly perform their duties far from the spotlight,” he said.
“I accept this honor on behalf of the men and women of the Philippine Coast Guard, whose courage, professionalism, and commitment continue to inspire me every day. If this distinction recognizes anything, it recognizes their service,” the Coast Guard chief added.
The Philippines and France have steadily strengthened defense and maritime ties in recent years through joint activities, capacity-building programs, and support for the PCG's modernization efforts.
One of the most visible symbols of that partnership is the French-built BRP Gabriela Silang (OPV-8301), the country's largest and most capable offshore patrol vessel when it entered PCG service.
Gavan also thanked Fontanel and the French Embassy for helping strengthen bilateral relations and expand practical cooperation between the two countries.
“France has consistently demonstrated its confidence in the Philippine Coast Guard and in the Philippines as a maritime partner. We do not take that trust lightly,” Gavan said.
