DOJ issues lookoout order vs Baldwin, 4 others

CIDG dares ex-Ateneo head coach to man up, face probe

The Department of Justice (DOJ) issued on Wednesday, June 17, a lookout order against former Ateneo de Manila University head coach Tab Baldwin and four others amid the ongoing investigation into the death of two college basketball players during an off-campus training in Aurora.
The DOJ said the issuance of an Immigration Bulletin Order (ILBO) was intended to alert the authorities in case a subject person attempts to leave the country while an investigation is ongoing.
In the case of Baldwin, at least three government agencies are conducting investigations into the drowning incident in Aurora—the Department of Labor and Employment, the Philippine National Police and the National Bureau of Investigation which is under the DOJ.
The DOLE wants to determine whether or not Baldwin has necessary documents to work in the Philippines.
Aside from Baldwin, included in the ILBO are former Ateneo team manager Christopher Quimpo; and assistant coaches Reynaldo Jacinto, Jr., Dean Castaño, and Sandro Soriano.
Man up
Several former and active players of the Ateneo basketball team were already interviewed by the police’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) amid the ongoing investigation to determine what happened during the incident.
Baldwin was earlier summoned but did not show up, prompting CIDG director Maj. Gen. Robert Alexander Morico II to dare him to face the investigators. A second summon was issued to Baldwin for him to appear before the CIDG this week.
"Man up. Be man enough to face the investigation in the interest of justice and equity for the two players whom you call brothers,’ said Morico.
He is referring to players Rene Baterbornia and Divine Adili.
“If you're talking about the battle cry of BEBOB [Blue Eagles, Band of Brothers], you would not turn your back. Help us also. Help the family attain justice,” he added.
Police earlier said that they are looking into possible violations of the anti-hazing law but so far, the intention is to come up with the clear picture of what happened before, during and after the drowning incident.
48 people summoned
In the press briefing, Morico said they issued summons to at least 48 people that could help them establish whether or not the incident in Aurora was an accident or not.
"We are expecting to interview and subpoena 48 persons. As of June 16, there were 10 who were subpoenaed and they appeared. Most of them are former players,” said Morico.
“The purpose of which is to gain insight on their past experiences and take any information especially those who have undergone so-called teambuilding or boot camp,” he added.
He said the investigation is ongoing and there were efforts from the CIDG to make the investigation as comfortable as possible.
“To make their presence in the CIDG headquarters as comfortable as possible, we have also provided a number of psychiatrists and psychologists for interventions if needed and when they ask for it," said Morico.
