CANDON CITY – Alas Pilipinas treated local fans with a 25-16, 25-12, 25-14 win over Uzbekistan in the opener of the 2026 AVC Women’s Volleyball Cup here at the Candon City Arena Saturday, June 6.
The Nationals dictated the pace throughout the match and did not show any issues on team chemistry despite only having a little time to train together.
Interim head coach Shaq Delos Santos knows the squad has plenty of room for improvement as they battle the best in the region.
“I think pag mas ginusto namin, I’m sure magiging okay pa ‘yong performance namin. But, to be honest, ang dami pa naming kulang,” said Delos Santos.
The world No. 46 Philippines struggled early against Uzbekistan before pulling away for good with veterans Alyssa Valdez, Jovelyn Gonzaga, and Ces Molina taking turns offensively and Nina Ytang and Thea Gagate providing the support.
“Halos lahat naman kailangan mag-perform. May mga players pa tayo na alam naman natin kaya pang tumulong sa team,” Delos Santos continued. “At sinasabi lang namin, kailangan lahat. Kasi kailangan tulong-tulong kahit everyday ‘yong game.”
The Nationals are squaring off with the Australians as of posting time, Uzbekistan on Monday, and South Korea the following day.
Then they take a one-day break Wednesday, June 10, which will be followed by their clash against Chinese Taipei on Thursday, June 11.
Delos Santos gives Ytang some reminders
Delos Santos commended Ytang for her impressive 12-point debut, including eight blocks and four attacks, but has some gentle reminders for the young hitter.
“Happy kami kasi siyempre alam namin ‘yong pwedeng magawa ni Ytang, and sobrang nakakatuwa kasi international ‘yong tournament na ‘to, excited din kasi siyang maglaro,” said Delos Santos.
“Gigil na gigil siya kanina, pero sabi nga namin kailangan ma-balance niya at makagalaw siya ng tama kasi baka mamaya ma-overwhelm, mas mawala doon sa mga gusto niyang gawin,” he added.
