Vietnam's Tô Lâm arrives in Manila for historic State Visit

Vietnamese President and Communist Party leader Tô Lâm arrived in the Philippines on Sunday, May 31, for a historic two-day State Visit aimed at deepening political, economic, and defense cooperation between Manila and Hanoi.
Lâm’s visit from May 31 to June 1 marks the first State Visit to the Philippines by a Communist Party chief of Vietnam.
The Vietnamese leader and his wife, Madame Ngo Phuong Ly, arrived aboard a Vietnam Airlines flight at Villamor Air Base in Pasay City at 12:40 p.m. and were accorded arrival honors.
Department of Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. led Philippine officials in welcoming the Vietnamese delegation on behalf of the government.
President Marcos is scheduled to formally welcome Lâm at the Kalayaan Grounds in Malacañang on Monday morning before the two leaders hold bilateral talks.
Prior to the Palace ceremonies, the Vietnamese leader will lay a wreath at the Rizal Monument in Manila.
According to Malacañang, the meeting between Marcos and Lâm is expected to further strengthen the Philippines and Vietnam’s political, defense, and economic partnership.
The two leaders are expected to discuss cooperation in trade and investment, food security, defense and maritime cooperation, education, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges.
After the bilateral meeting, Marcos and Lâm are expected to witness the presentation of signed agreements and hold a joint press conference.
President Marcos will also host a State Luncheon in honor of the Vietnamese leader.
The visit coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Vietnam, as well as the 10th anniversary of their Strategic Partnership.
Vietnam remains the Philippines’ sole Strategic Partner in Southeast Asia.
More than 7,000 Filipinos currently live in Vietnam.
The Philippines is also set to open a consulate general in Ho Chi Minh City by mid-2026 as part of efforts to further expand bilateral engagement between the two countries.
