CEBU CITY – A 56-year-old farmer was accidentally shot and killed while pacifying an altercation in Toledo City, Cebu.
The fatality was identified as Juan Engaling.
The incident happened on Sunday night, May 24, in Barangay General Climaco.
Investigation conducted by the Toledo City Police Station showed that Engaling was drinking with his neighbor, Saniboy Rabago, 37, when another neighbor, Eduardo Abadiano, 47, arrived.
Rabago confronted Abadiano over an old grudge, triggering a heated argument.
Abadiano took a gun from his sling bag but was punched in the head by Rabago.
Abadiano fired a shot and he and Rabago wrestled for the gun. Engaling, who tried to break up the fight, was hit in the back and slumped to the ground. He was brought to the Toledo City General Hospital where he was declared dead.
Abadiano fled after the incident but eventually surrendered to the police around 8 p.m. on Monday, May 25.
Police said a Smith & Wesson revolver was recovered from the suspect.
Charges for homicide and violation of Republic Act 10591, or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, were filed against the suspect.
