“The Boys” is quite possibly one of the most brutal, raunchiest superhero shows to ever grace our screens, and it’s about to reach its bloody end this week.
Based on the 2006 comic book of the same name, the Amazon Prime Video series had a humble start as a parody of the domination of superheroes in pop culture. In it, we follow a ragtag bunch of vigilantes trying to put a stop to superpowered beings produced by Vought International. Referred to as “supes,” these ultra-powered beings are anything but benign.

Among the most powerful supes are members of The Seven, led by the egotistical Homelander (Anthony Starr). Throughout the final season, Homelander has been pushed to the edge and is set on being worshipped as a living god. His team has dominated the entirety of the US, and it’s up to our weathered protagonists to try and stop the madman. Front and center of the group is Butcher (Karl Urban), a bereaved husband dead set on eliminating every single supe after Homelander assaulted his wife. He is joined by the team’s moral compass, Hughie (Jack Quaid), a former US Navy Marine, Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso), a drug-fueled chemist and a jack-of-all trades, Frenchie (Tomer Capone), a nearly-immortal rescued supe, Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara), and former Seven member Starlight (Erin Moriarty).
THE OG BOYS Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's 'The Boys' ran from 2006 to 2012 under Dynamite Entertainment
Through its five-season run, “The Boys” has been filled with action-packed sequences, gross-out gore, fetish-heavy sex scenes, and in-your-face political satire. It has been nominated 12 times at the Primetime Emmy Awards, taking home four over the years. Praise has been given by both fans and critics alike for how fresh the show felt during its premiere. As it nears the end, however, there have been mixed feelings for its final season. Fans have been vocal online regarding the fifth season’s seemingly low-budget approach and slow-moving narrative. With only eight episodes to wrap up the entire series, many are worried the show will botch its finale. A common criticism of this season is how much of its runtime was spent building up lore for an upcoming spin-off prequel series, “Vought Rising.” Many also complained how the main cast aren’t seen as much, with a lot of scenes focusing more on Homelander and his revived supe father, Soldier Boy (Jenson Ackles).
One thing’s for certain, the finale is building up to be one of its biggest episodes yet as it promises the final showdown between Homelander and everyone else. Judging from the show’s source material, we can all expect the unhinged hero to go on an all-out rampage. While showrunner Eric Kripke has been careful not to fully copy-paste everything from Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic, he has chosen the best bits and adapted them well for the series. Even with fans feeling nervous for its end, “The Boys” has certainly had a good run and we’re hoping it ends with a diabolical bang.
