Despite her success as comedienne, Ai-Ai delas Alas actually once thought of leaving show business for good.
This was when she was still married to Gerald Sibayan.
In her interview on "Toni Talks", the comedienne shared that it was one of the many reasons why she moved to America with Gerald.
"‘Di ba pumunta kami ni third husband [Gerald] sa Amerika? So iyon ‘yung time na, ‘Ah! Dito na lang ako, Amerika. Alagaan ko ‘yung asawa ko,'" Ai-Ai said.
A good friend jolted her to her senses, noting how making people happy is a huge part of her being.
"Sabi niya, ‘Hindi. Hindi mong hindi gugustuhin ang showbiz. Kilala kita, babalik at babalik ka riyan," she added.
In the end, Ai-Ai realized her friend was right. Show business is her life.
She then promised to continue performing for the rest of her life.
"Totoo yung sinabi ng friend ko. Ayoko ng ibang work. Gusto ko artista lang ako for life hanggang (mawala) ako," Ai-Ai said.
But if there's one thing that she hates about the industry she's in, it's the "politics."
She explained, "Parang kunwari, si ganito powerful tapos parang nainggit siya sa ‘yo, tatanggalin ka na, mawawalan ka na ng show."
In the same interview, Ai-Ai admitted that she just wanted a steady job when she entered show business.
"Ang talagang goal ko lang naman is mabuhay ko ‘yung pamilya ko, ‘yung nanay ko, magkaroon ako ng work. Tapos nu’ng nasa showbiz na ako, siyempre, hindi ko naman binalak na ‘yun talagang maging bida," she said.
Even after earning widespread recognition and multiple awards, Ai-Ai still remembers with fondness her early days in show business.
"Nakakatuwa kasi parang pelikula rin na wala kasi akong kotse so, sasakay ako sa tricycle. Mauuna kang pupunta, kasabay mo ‘yung mga cable [guys]. Huli ka ring aalis after nu’ng shoot kasi kasabay ka nga nu’ng mga cable. Sasabay ka sa service," Ai-Ai shared with a laugh.
