No casualties after shots fired at Senate, PNP says; Around 1,500 cops secure building
The Philippine National Police (PNP) is now conducting verification and situation assessment in the Senate following the tensions that erupted on Wednesday night, May 13, including gunshots that were heard inside the establishment in Pasay City.
And based on the initial assessment, PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. said there were no reported casualties in what he described as live fire that happened inside the Senate building.
“We will find out what happened,” said Nartatez, who arrived at the Senate at around 9 p.m. in what appeared to be a meeting with the Senate leadership.
Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) earlier arrived at the Senate and entered the building along with National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) chief Maj. Gen. Anthony A. Aberin.
For his part, PNP spokesman Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño said verification is undergoing in order to determine all the circumstances that led to the incident.
“More or less 1,500 PNP personnel remain deployed in the Senate area to ensure security while verification and assessment are ongoing regarding the alleged shot fired incident within the Senate premises,” said Tuaño.
