Motorists can expect lighter traffic along one of Manila's busiest thoroughfares as the drainage improvement project on Bonifacio Drive near Roxas Boulevard is set to wrap up by May 15, according to city officials.
Manila Mayor Francisco Domagoso and Department of Public Works and Highways Secretary Vince Dizon inspected on Wednesday, May 13, the ongoing works, which aim to ease congestion and reduce flooding in the area.
During an ambush interview, Dizon said the affected stretch of road is expected to reopen to motorists by Friday, May 15, following accelerated repair works on the drainage system.
“Traffic sa mga galing sa pier (Traffic for vehicles coming from the port),” Dizon said, noting that the project targets one of Manila’s major thoroughfares heavily used by cargo trucks and private vehicles coming from the port area.
According to the DPWH chief, the final phase of the project involved the use of a more expensive three-day concrete curing process to speed up completion.
“Ito na ang last portion, three-day concrete. Mas mahal pero pinaspasan nila (This is the last portion, using three-day concrete. It’s more expensive, but they fast-tracked it),” he said.
Dizon added that the upgraded drainage system and pumping station will be put to the test during the rainy season.
“Masusubukan sa tag-ulan. Gumagana naman ang pumping station (It will be tested during the rainy season. The pumping station is working properly),” he said.
The DPWH said around 300 meters of previously closed road sections are expected to reopen by Friday, with authorities hoping this will significantly improve traffic flow in the area.
The inspection underscored continued coordination between the national government and the Manila city government in fast-tracking infrastructure and flood mitigation projects for motorists and residents.
