Netizens now Manila's 'new CCTV'; cops move faster

In a city where almost every street incident can be captured in real time, Manila authorities are hailing netizens as an informal “new CCTV system,” as citizen-recorded videos and photos continue to help speed up police response and arrests.
During his “Talk to the People” broadcast, Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso highlighted how citizen participation has become a major force in crime response, especially as social media posts and mobile footage are increasingly used as actionable evidence.
Manila Police District chief Gen. Arnold Santiago said public cooperation has significantly improved how quickly authorities can track suspects and resolve cases, noting that even online uploads are now being actively backtracked by investigators.
He assured residents that all reports, whether big or small, are being acted upon and that justice remains the priority.
He also emphasized that citizens who capture incidents on video play a vital role in helping police identify suspects faster, while their identities will be protected by authorities.
The mayor, for his part, warned offenders that the city government will continue to pursue criminals, stressing that there is no escape from accountability in Manila and urging those involved in illegal activities to change their ways.
Officials added that the combination of police operations and real time citizen footage has become a powerful tool in making crime response faster and more precise.
