Sign of accountability: Nartatez welcomes filing of case vs PNPA cadets in muriatic acid hazing
Justice and accountability are on the right track in the case of muriatic acid hazing, national police chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. as he welcomed the filing of a criminal case against the seven cadets of the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA).
For Nartatez, the fast investigation result that led to the filing of the case of violation of Republic Act No. 11053 or the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018 is a clear sign of accountability within the ranks and affirms the organization’s commitment to uphold the law and protect cadets from abuse.
“The filing of cases shows that the PNP’s system of discipline and accountability are working. Regardless of the people and the ranks involved, there will always be a certainty of facing the consequences of violating our rules and regulations, and the rule of law,” said Nartatez.
The case stemmed from an incident reported on April 3 inside the PNPA compound in Silang where 22 underclass cadets were allegedly subjected to hazing.
Reports said some suffered burns after exposure to chemicals such as muriatic acid and drain cleaner, which were reportedly used as punishment by their upperclassmen.
Nartatez acknowledged that fully eliminating hazing remains a challenge but he stressed that firm measures are in place.
“Eradication is a tall order, but it is our goal. We cannot promise zero incidents overnight but it is clear that this will not be tolerated under my leadership. Our goal is zero hazing and we are strengthening systems for this purpose,” said Nartatez.
