'The King's Warden' starring Park Ji-hoon reaches 15 million moviegoers, third in history
SEOUL, South Korea - The hit Korean film “The King’s Warden” has reached another milestone, garnering 15 million moviegoers in South Korea.
The King’s Warden” stars K-pop idol and actor Park Ji-hoon, Yoo Hae-jin, Yoo Ji-tae, Jeon Mi-do, Lee Joon-hyuk, and Ahn Jae-hong.
Set in 1457 during the Joseon Dynasty in Korea, the historical film tells the story of King Danjong (Yi Hong-wi), played by Park Ji-hoon, who is betrayed by his uncle and dethroned. He is exiled to Cheongnyeongpo, Yeongwol, Gangwon Province, and encounters the village chief, Eom Heung-do (Yoo Hae-jin).
It reached the milestone on March 25 when it recorded 15,031,643 moviegoers, or 50 days after its release in Korean cinemas on Feb. 4. The milestone was achieved just 19 days after surpassing 10 million moviegoers.
“We sincerely thank the 15 million viewers who have accompanied us on this endless journey of success,” Showbox, its distributor, posted on X.
“The King’s Warden” is the third movie in Korean cinema history to reach 15 million moviegoers after “The Admiral: Roaring Currents,” which achieved it in 2014 and tallied 17.61 million moviegoers, and “Extreme Job” in 2019, which has 16.26 million moviegoers.
As of March 26, “The King’s Warden” has recorded 15.1 million moviegoers and gross of $96.4 million.
