Artists bring music, protest art to Women's Day gathering in Manila
Songs of resistance and striking protest art filled the air as pro-people artists joined women activists marking International Women's Day on Sunday, March 8, at Liwasang Bonifacio.
Artists and cultural groups performed socially conscious songs and staged creative installations that doubled as photo backdrops for rally participants.
Some artists also prepared large effigies and visual protest pieces ahead of the mobilization, portraying political figures and symbols of corruption as part of the demonstration’s message.
The activities were part of a larger protest led by GABRIELA and allied groups commemorating International Women’s Day.
Beyond speeches and placards, cultural performances played a central role in the program. Protest art, music, and installations served as both creative expression and political statement, a tradition long practiced by activist cultural groups such as Panday Sining, which uses concerts, street art, and visual pieces to highlight social issues.
Participants took photos beside carrying placards and effigies while performers led chants and songs calling for justice and reforms, transforming the historic plaza into a space where art and activism converged.
