The FINEX Environment Committee Handbook has finally been completed, with both printed copies and a digital version now available. I would like to share the story behind the making of this handbook—a journey I spoke about during our successful launch at the Land Bank of the Philippines.
This project began when Ms. Flor Tarriela, our Liaison Director for the Environment Committee, invited me to join the committee and chair this handbook initiative. She emphasized the need to update the Climate Change and Natural Farming Handbook prepared by the committee several years ago, recognizing that sustainability challenges—and their solutions—have continued to evolve.
The invitation came shortly after we completed the 2024 FINEX Ethics Book Volume 2, Ethics: Enduring and Evolving, where I also served as Project Chair and Flor as my Liaison Director for the Ethics Committee. Building on that successful collaboration, I invited Albert Gamboa to serve once again as our copy editor, a role he also fulfilled for the ethics book.
With the approval of the Environment Committee, chaired by Mr. Goody Hernandez (who also serves as an Independent Director of Land Bank), we decided to expand the scope of the initiative. Rather than limiting ourselves to climate change and natural farming, we envisioned a comprehensive Sustainability Handbook covering governance, social responsibility, and long-term development.
We were blessed to gather an excellent group of contributors—true advocates of sustainability—who generously shared their expertise. While we initially expected only a few contributors, we soon realized we are surrounded by many individuals deeply committed to these critical global issues. As a result, the handbook is not only updated but rich in content, relevant, and truly informative.
FINEX and the Environment Committee are deeply grateful to the Land Bank of the Philippines and its President and CEO, Ms. Lynette Ortiz, for their invaluable support in making the printing of this handbook possible. We also thank our hardworking Chair, Mr. Goody Hernandez, for his role in this partnership.
We firmly believe that Land Bank’s mandate as a government financial institution goes far beyond profitability. Its core mission—supporting agriculture, fisheries, and rural development—is crucial in a country like the Philippines, which is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
By supporting sustainability and climate action through initiatives like this handbook, Land Bank is investing in people, communities, and future generations. The bank understands that economic growth and environmental responsibility must go hand in hand. When farmers are well-informed and equipped to implement sustainable practices, their productivity improves, ultimately strengthening their capacity to meet their financial obligations.
This handbook is the result of a genuine collective effort. On a personal note, I am encouraged that more people today are aware of the need to not only promote sustainability but to practice it with discipline and commitment.
This project may be a small step, but with the support of many, we hope it will go a long way in inspiring concrete actions toward building a better world. After all, this planet does not belong to just one person or one generation. It is our shared responsibility to care for it—for ourselves and for the generations yet to come.
