ZAMBOANGA CITY – A Jordanian national linked to suspects in the December 2025 terrorist attack in Sydney, Australia was arrested during a joint law enforcement operation in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur on Monday.
The 1st Infantry Division (ID) identified the suspect as Odeh, 65, who was nabbed at his business establishment.
“Odeh was arrested for violation of the Philippine Immigration Act of 1940, specifically overstaying and engaging in gainful business without the proper visa or permit,” the 1st ID said in a report.
The operation followed a security review conducted by 1st ID and Joint Task Force-Zampelan after information received through partner security channels indicated that Odeh’s business establishment in the Philippines is connected to suspects in the Dec. 14, 2025 attack near Sydney’s Bondi Beach.
The attack targeted the Jewish community’s “Chanukah by the Sea” celebration, resulting in multiple casualties and injuries. It was classified by Australian authorities as an antisemitic terrorist incident.
“Based on this information, Philippine security agencies identified Odeh as a person of interest for further review, prompting coordination among concerned government agencies and the conduct of appropriate legal action related to his immigration status,” the 1st ID said.
Authorities reviewed Odeh’s travel and immigration records, which indicate that from 2014 to 2025, he frequently traveled to Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Malaysia.
Odeh obtained a temporary residence visa in 2023, which expired in March 2025.
Initial investigation has not established Odeh’s direct involvement in the terrorist activity, but authorities said coordination with relevant national and international partners will continue to fully assess potential security concerns. (PNA)
