DAVAO CITY – Tourism industry leaders and government officials opened the 16th Davao Mega Travel Sale on Friday, Feb. 27, highlighting Mindanao’s growing outbound market, plans to expand international connectivity, and a two-million visitor target for Davao City in 2026.
The Davao Travel Agencies Association Inc. organized the three-day event at Abreeza Ayala Malls here, bringing together around 40 exhibitors from travel agencies and tour operators offering seat sales, airlines, hotels and resorts, and other tourism-related businesses.
DTAA President Gian Carlo Caguiat said this year’s event showcases newly curated travel packages and highlights emerging international destinations, aiming to connect Davao-based travelers with competitive deals and a broader selection of destinations under one roof.
Caguiat said Davao and the broader Mindanao market are now being recognized as significant sources of airline passengers, prompting carriers and tour operators to extend lower promotional rates during the Davao Mega Travel Sale.
“We are now recognized as one of the key providers of passengers for airlines and tour operators,” Caguiat said. “A significant portion of the load comes from Davao and Mindanao, which is why we are extending lower rates here to entice more travel.”
Caguiat said the challenge now is to diversify offerings by introducing new and emerging destinations, including Central Asian countries—Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan—to the people of Davao.
Thus, he added, DTAA plans to strengthen partnerships across Mindanao to present “one voice” in negotiations with airlines, consolidating passenger data and market demand to build a stronger case, with the long-term goal of attracting more direct international flights to Davao.
“Our plan in the future is to have more international flights. So, we make noise, we show them the numbers, and we show the airlines what we can do,” Caguiat said, adding that organizers aim to roll out another set of new destinations next year.
Amid intense competition and price wars at travel expos, the DTAA official emphasized that the advantage of booking through accredited travel agencies extends beyond airfare discounts. He said that when travel concerns arise, such as rebooking, travel agents can handle them.
Caguiat described travel agents as “guardians” who assist travelers even beyond office hours. He added that DTAA members partner with banks to offer installment options, making bookings affordable, and encourage travelers to seek professional advice rather than book trips on their own.
Philippine Airlines Vice President for Sales and Distribution Justin Warby who is participating for the first time in the Davao Travel Mega Sale, reaffirmed the airline’s commitment to maintaining strong connectivity between Davao and the rest of the country and the world.
“When people think of flights, they think of holidays. But connecting flights is about connecting communities and cultures. It is not just about tourism; it is about economics,” Warby said as he announced that PAL will bring its Airbus A350-1000 to Davao on March 5 at around 2 p.m.
Warby said the A350-1000 marks the first time the flagship aircraft will land in the city. He added that the aircraft features upgraded business class suites, enhanced premium economy, and expanded legroom in economy class.
Department of Tourism-11 Regional Director Tanya Rabat-Tan said that while most packages on sale are outbound, the event also serves as a platform to promote the Davao region. He added that the event is not just about selling tickets, it’s about opening doors to discovery and learning.
A RIBBON-CUTTING ceremony kicked off the event on Friday, Feb. 27.
Tan said the event helps position Davao and the Philippines “at the heart of every traveler’s dream,” adding that travel works both ways by encouraging cultural exchange and exposing visitors to what Davao has to offer. “Diversity is our beauty here in Davao.”
She also cited sustainability measures, such as strict visitor limits in top destinations like Mount Apo to avoid overcrowding and environmental damage, and close coordination with local government units to ensure proper monitoring and compliance with environmental rules.
Tan said Davao has enough facilities and hotel rooms to host large-scale events. She added that to promote inclusivity, the DOT is implementing programs like the Davao Adventure Program, which features 30 community-run adventure sites in the Davao region.
Davao City Tourism Operations Office officer-in-charge Willenito Tormis Jr. said the city is targeting two million air travel visitors in 2026. He added that trade shows like this are invaluable as they open opportunities for all travelers to discover what’s in store for them here.
Tourism officials said the travel sale supports Davao’s efforts to develop community-based tourism sites by promoting local cultural communities and activities, such as immersion programs, coffee tours, and other community experiences.
“For major events like Araw ng Davao, we are expecting around 200,000 guests. Our hotels and MICE sector are ready to accommodate them,” Tormis said. “From time to time, we check our hotels, partners, and airport to ensure visitors will have a great stay in Davao City.”
He said the city government also hosts its own trade fairs and festivals to support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), ensuring that cultural products, food vendors, and local exhibitors are given a platform alongside larger players.
Councilor Myrna Dalodo-Ortiz, chairwoman of the Committee on Tourism and Beautification, lauded the DTAA for continuously creating opportunities that strengthen Davao City's tourism industry. She added that DMTS reflects resilience and innovation of the travel sector.
Ortiz said such an initiative will not only connect Davao to other destinations but also energize the city's local economy, generate employment, and position Davao as a dynamic hub for travel and business.
The 16th Davao Mega Travel Sale runs until March 1, with organizers urging travelers to take advantage of exclusive fares, expert guidance, and new destination offerings while reinforcing Davao’s role as a growing tourism and aviation hub in Mindanao.
