Liberal Party (LP) Chairperson Mamamayang Liberal (ML) Party-list Rep. Leila de Lima had this to say Wednesday, Feb 25, as she reflected on the significance of the 40th anniversary of the bloodless revolution that led to the ouster of the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos Sr.
(Today, for some, EDSA feels like a distant memory. There are even debates on whether it should still be commemorated. Marcos is once again the surname of the president. And there are politicians aspiring for the highest office in the land while carrying a politics that runs counter to accountability and respect for institutions.)
De Lima said the current situation cannot be attributed to the "failure" of EDSA.
"Hindi alaala lamang ang diwa ng EDSA. Isa itong tungkulin (The spirit of EDSA is not just memory. It is a duty)," she stressed.
The former senator reckoned that the spirit of EDSA "is not just memory, It is a duty".
At bawat taon, may bagong hamon sa kalayaan — mas sopistikado, mas maingay, mas tuso," she said.

(Forty years after People Power, justice remains incomplete. There are institutions that still need healing and strengthening. There are gaps in accountability that must be filled. And each year, new threats to freedom arise — more sophisticated, louder, more cunning.)
The enemies of democracy change form. So must our ways of responding to them)," reckoned De Lima.
Kinakailangan ang pagkilos," she said.
(For the LP, commemorating EDSA is more than an annual ritual. It is a pledge to defend the rule of law, to strengthen democratic institutions, and to demand accountable governance.)
De Lima says the fight for democracy in the country continues, and that it's up to the Filipinos to show their courage and unyielding spirit.
