The Department of Education (DepEd) is strengthening regional cooperation with Southeast Asian nations to accelerate the use of artificial intelligence (AI)-driven digital infrastructure in basic education, positioning technology as a practical tool to improve learning outcomes and reduce teachers’ administrative burdens.
In a statement issued Tuesday, February 10, DepEd said it actively engaged education leaders, policymakers, and development partners during the 3rd Regional Policy Convening of the AI Ready ASEAN Programme, held earlier this week in Pasig City.
The convening is part of a regional initiative to promote AI literacy and the responsible use of emerging technologies across ASEAN member states, DepEd added.

The Philippines’ contribution to the regional effort is anchored in Project AGAP.AI, DepEd’s flagship program that integrates AI into education.
Since its launch, nearly 796,000 Filipino learners and educators have completed training on AI fundamentals, preparing schools for smarter, data-driven learning environments.
“The Philippines does not see the digital race as a solitary journey. We stand ready to walk alongside our ASEAN neighbors—sharing our insights, our resources, and our steadfast commitment,” DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara said in a message.
“Together, we can build a digitally empowered region where growth is shared and progress is collective,” he added.
DepEd said the regional collaboration is expected to benefit Filipino students through improved access to digital learning tools, more effective online and blended platforms, and data-driven interventions that identify and address learning gaps early.
“These measures aim to make learning more personalized, ethical, and inclusive,” DepEd added.

For teachers, DepEd explained that the partnership promises AI-enabled systems that streamline administrative tasks, support lesson planning with smarter resources, and deliver real-time insights on student progress—allowing educators to focus more on teaching and direct learner engagement.
Supported by the ASEAN Foundation and a grant from Google.org, DepEd announced that the AI Ready ASEAN initiative will also align with the Philippines' chairmanship of ASEAN in 2026, emphasizing digital transformation in education and ensuring that AI benefits reach diverse communities.
DepEd stressed that AI adoption in schools is designed to strengthen—not replace—teachers, equipping learners with the digital skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.
