SANTA MARIA, Ilocos Sur – Most Reverend David William V. Antonio was installed as the new and eighth archbishop of the Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia at the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption here on Wednesday, Jan. 14.
The installation and Mass were presided over by Most Reverend Charles John Brown, Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, and witnessed by prelates led by Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, Pro-Prefect for the Section for First Evangelization and New Particular Churches of the Dicastery for Evangelization; Jose Cardinal Advincula, Archbishop of Manila; Orlando Cardinal Quevedo, and Bishop Gilbert A. Garcera, president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) and metropolitan archbishop of Lipa.
Theme of the event was theme “Ut vitam habeant” (That they may have life) or “Tapno maaddaanda iti biag” in Ilocano.
The three cardinals, in their homilies, conveyed their warm greetings and support to Antonio as the new shepherd of the centuries-old Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia, one of the Philippines’ foundational dioceses and a historic ecclesiastical center in Northern Luzon.
Antonio thanked prelates, clergy, and Catholic faithful who attended and witnessed his installation.
He said that his pastoral priorities would focus on proclaiming and living out God’s Word, fostering a listening Church, especially among the poor, strengthening family apostolate, advancing social action initiatives, protecting the environment, and promoting ecumenical engagement.
Antonio said he begins his ministry as a servant of Nueva Segovia with humility and compassion, committed to upholding human dignity, unity, and mutual support rooted in faith.
Pope Leo XIV appointed Antonio as archbishop of Nueva Segovia on Nov. 4, 2025, succeeding retired Archbishop Marlo M. Peralta.
Previously Bishop of Ilagan, Antonio was born on Dec. 29, 1963, in Barangay Nagtupacan, Santo Domingo, Ilocos Sur. He was ordained a priest on Dec. 1, 1988, for the Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia.
He studied philosophy at San Pablo Seminary in Baguio City and theology at the Immaculate Conception School of Theology in Vigan City. He later earned a doctorate in theology from The Catholic University of America in Washington D.C.
