Kaila Estrada on being a better actress than her mom: 'I disagree'
At A Glance
- Many are comparing Kaila Estrada, acting-wise, to Janice de Belen, a topic she finally addressed in a recent interview.
Leaving a mark on audiences through her portrayals of Bettina in "Can't Buy Me Love," and Max in "Incognito," Kaila Estrada is now being compared to her mom, award-winning actress Janice De Belen.
During the media conference of her newest TV series, "What Lies Beneath" at Seda Vertis North on Oct. 13, Kaila made clear she disagrees with the notion that she's better than her mom, acting-wise. This, even if her mom herself, said so.
"She said that? Thanks, mom! (But) I disagree. I feel like my parents, gusto lang nila ipagmalaki ang mga anak nila (they just want to show how proud they are of their children),” she said.
Kaila was quick to acknowledge her mom's influence on her though, deeming her "a living legend."
"I look up to her in all aspects of my life, not just as an artist. Having said that, nandito rin ako para ipagmalaki siya, and I’m so proud to be her daughter. I’m so proud of what she has achieved. I only wish to achieve half of that," Kaila said.
From Spy to Lawyer
After dabbling in the world of action, Kaila is now apt to display her dramatic prowess in "What Lies Beneath."
"For me, the challenge in portraying Erica is hinged on restraint. I need to pick my battles as to when I'm going to be more emotional or show vulnerability. Once na nakikita na nila direk Dado [Lumibao] na naiyak na ako pinapapunas talaga nila sa akin yung luha ko," Kaila said.
Despite the story being a bit too heavy for her, emotionally-speaking, Kaila maintained she is enjoying the whole process especially when she gets to share scenes with real-life friends Sue Ramirez, Janella Salvador, and Charlie Dizon.
"It’s a very supportive energy lalo na samin apat. I feel like makikita ng mga tao yung chemistry talaga naming apat. Maniniwala talaga sila na magkakabarkada kami or childhood [friends] kami kasi parang ganun yung pakiramdam,” Kaila said.
(It’s a very supportive energy, especially for the four of us. I feel like people will really see the chemistry among us. They will really believe that we are friends or childhood [friends] because that’s how it feels.)
"What Lies Beneath" premieres on Netflix on October 17. It will debut on iWant on October 18. It will also air on Kapamilya Online Live, Kapamilya Channel, A2Z, and TV5, starting October 20.
