Kai Sotto is nearing his full recovery as he returns to training with his Japanese team Koshigaya Alphas in the B.League recently.
The 23-year-old big man attended the Alphas tip-off event last Sunday, Aug. 17, and even posted some clips of him participating in shooting and dribbling drills shortly after rejoining the team in its practice facility.
The 7-foot-3 player has been out of commission for Koshigaya and Gilas Pilipinas after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear on his knee last January.
“I’m going to continue doing my rehab and hopefully when I get ready, I’ll be back on the court with you all,” Sotto said in a promotional video posted by his team last week.
Aside from the Alphas, Sotto’s nearing return should also be big news for the national team which badly missed the services of the towering center who averaged 15.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.3 assists through Gilas’ sweep of the first two windows of the Asia Cup qualifiers.
The Nationals actually struggled without Sotto, as, apart from losing the last two games of the qualifiers, Gilas finished seventh in the Asia Cup with a 2-3 record.
Four of the team's last five losses in the international competition came at the hands of both New Zealand and Chinese Taipei – two teams that Gilas defeated when Sotto was playing.
Sotto is expected to still miss the first window of the World Cup qualifiers this November while recovering from the injury, leaving Gilas with AJ Edu, June Mar Fajardo and possibly, newly classified as local, Quentin Millora-Brown to hold the fort.
