Filipino mathletes triumphed again in the just-concluded International Mathematics Competition-Singapore (IMC-S), held August 1 to 4 in the famed Lion City.
The 26-member team brought home three gold, seven silver, and 13 bronze medals, as well as three merit citations, in the 10-nation contest, according to Dr. Simon Chua, head of the Mathematics Trainers' Guild (MTG), which mentors the contingent.
MTG officer Manuel Kotah led the Philippine delegation.
In 2024, young Filipino math aces also had a bountiful harvest from the IMC-S, winning five gold, 10 silver, and 25 bronze medals, as well as 10 merit certificates.
This year, China, Taiwan, and Vietnam topped the contest.
The other participating nations and territories include Hong Kong, Macau, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore, as the host.
Chua recalled that the Philippines ruled the IMC-S in 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2018, besting math powerhouses China and Taiwan.
Chua named the Filipino gold medalists as Albert Steven Sy (St. Jude Catholic School), Richard Cruz (La Marea Academy), and Maree Giulia Ysabelle Somera (Holy Trinity University).
The silver medalists are Avi Zanoah Asperin (St. Jude Catholic School), Zbryx Deonell Halog (St. Mary's College, QC), Adel Azim Elias (Zamboanga Chong Hua High School), Micah Kal El Dugayo (Notre Dame of Greater Manila), Jeron Cedric Tan (Mother Goose Special Schools System), Chloe Felicity Wan (Northern Rizal Yorklin School System), and Sean Paulo Divinagracia (Polomolok Central Elementary School).
The bronze medal winners are Andrea Litan (First Asia Institute of Technology and Humanities), Matt Gerard Navarro (Phil. Science High School-Main Campus), Ethan Gabriel Ngo (Hope Christian High School), Vince Jayden Chen (Chiang Kai Shek College), Sofia Victoria Domingo (Xavier School Nuvali), Peter Jacob Lopingco (International School Manila), Chris Caleb Nua (Hope Christian High School), John Marcus Redito (UST-Legazpi), Erwyn Andrei Vibal (PSHS Main Campus), Zoe Faith Alonzo (Philippine Cultural College Main Campus), Daniel James Veloso (Sto. The Merit awardees are Jarred Cedric Tan (Mother Goose Special Schools System - Dagupan), Harvey Matthew Ang (Grace Christian College), and Prince Kyle Tan (Phil. Institute of Quezon City).
IMC-S focuses on problem-solving and mathematical skills applicable to real-world situations. It also provides a platform for students to connect with peers from around the world and explore potential career paths in mathematics.
