The House of Representatives has comfortably passed on third and final reading the measure that would extend the terms of Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials from the current three years to six years .

Approved during plenary session on Monday night, June 9 was House Bill (HB) No.11287, which sought to "fix" the terms of the village and youth officials.

The measure received 153 affirmative votes during nominal voting. Four solons entered negative votes, while one abstained.

It saw its second reading passage in the lower chamber way back on Jan. 27, 2025. After that, solons had to go on break in preparation for the 2025 mid-term elections.

Principally authored by no less than House Speaker Martin Romualdez, HB No.11287 amends for the purpose Sections 42 and 43 of Republic Act (RA) No.7160, otherwise known as the Local Government Code (LGC) of 1991, as amended.

Aside from extending the terms of the village and youth officials from the current three years to six years, the bills also seeks to reschedule the next Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) on the second Monday of May 2029.

The bill sets a two-term limit for elective Barangay officials and one term for elective SK officials.

All incumbent village and youth officials elected last Oct. 30, 2023--the previous BSKE--will remain in office until the next election in May 2029, unless they are sooner removed or suspended for cause.

HB No.11287 was given final approval in the House just two days before the sine die adjournment of the 19th Congress.
