ILOILO CITY – Health authorities announced on Wednesday, May 28, that this city and the province of Iloilo have two confirmed monkeypox cases, following the
release of laboratory results from the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) in Muntinlupa City.
Dr. Mary Ann Diaz, chief of the Iloilo City Health Office (ICHO), disclosed that the infected person is in stable condition.
Dr. Maria Socorro Colmenars-Quiñon, chief of the Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO), said the infected person is recuperating at home.
Based on epidemiology reports, both cases are locally transmitted as the two infected persons do not have a travel history.
The close contacts of the two infected persons – four in this city and nine in Iloilo – have been isolated and are under close observation.
Dr. Roland Jay Fortuna, assistant city health officer, said there is no community transmission of monkeypox.
Health authorities urged the public to take extra precaution against monkeypox, including avoiding crowded places to minimize skin-to-skin contact.
The public was reminded to observe proper hygiene by washing their hands thoroughly and using either alcohol or liquid sanitizers.
Health authorities asked people to seek medical attention if monkeypox symptoms – skin rashes, swollen lymph nodes, fever, headache, muscle ache, and back pain – are observed.
