The renowned American vocal harmony group Boyz II Men made a highly anticipated return to the Philippine stage, delivering an unforgettable performance at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City on May 18, as presented by Wilbros Live!
The atmosphere was electric as fans filled the venue, eager to hear the soulful sounds of the legendary trio known for their smooth harmonies and heartfelt ballads.
As the night unfolded, Boyz II Men captivated the audience with a mix of their classic hits and newer tracks, creating an unforgettable experience that resonated deeply with their devoted followers.
The trio, composed of baritone Nathan Morris, tenor Wanya Morris, and Shawn Stockman, kicked off the show with the upbeat song "Can't Let Her Go - Don't Stop." It then transitioned into the hit song "Water Runs Dry," which elicited screams from the audience.
Following the introduction to the song "Can You Stand the Rain," the group blended harmonies with the ballad "On Bended Knee," which reached No. 1 in December 1994.
"How many of you are seeing us for the very first time live? To all the newcomers, thank you for being here. And for all those who have seen us before, welcome back. How are you doing? It's good to see your faces again. Allow us to introduce ourselves again. We are Boyz II Men from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania," said Shawn. "We have only one rule, Manila. Enjoy yourselves. That's it. Let's enjoy the moment while we have it together."
The group slowed down for another big hit, "4 Seasons of Loneliness," their fifth No. 1 song in 1997.
Then the show's rock section honored musicians The Beatles, Bruno Mars, Michael Jackson and Prince and the Revolution as the group performed "Locked Out of Heaven," "Come Together," and Purple Rain.
Before performing another hit ballad, "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday," Wanya shared with fans how their group motivated them to perform once more in Manila.
"In a decade, we lost three women who are very close to us. They were the primary reasons why we initiated this from the very beginning. Nate lost his mother, Shawn lost his mother, and I lost my grandmother.
"It hit really hard that we actually don't want to do this anymore because they were the reasons. But when we thought about Manila, the Philippines, and the Asian Region, we actually felt we were indebted to you.
"You guys mean so much to us. You are the reason why we are on stage right now. I swear that when it becomes hard, you try your best to navigate it and figure out how it works. It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday," Wanya said.
Then the hits keep coming on stage: "One Sweet Day" (No. 1, 1995); "I'll Make Love To You" (No. 1, 1994), and "End of the Road" (No. 1, 1992).
As the boys performed "I'll Make Love to You," they held roses to give to the ladies in the VIP section of the audience. Boyz II Men made an encore with bouncy numbers "Road" and "Motown."
I was waiting for some of my personal favorites to be performed during the concert, but the show had ended.
Forty years after the group was formed, the members still got the pipes. It won't be long until they return to Manila to perform other hits like "In The Still of the Night," "Doin' Just Fine," "A Song for Mama," and "The Color of Love."
Hopefully, there will be bonus tracks during the show, including "Vision of Sunset," a stunning solo by Shawn, and "Your Home Is In My Heart," a lovely duet with Chante Moore.
