Poll-related gun attacks in Basilan since May 11 leave 7 dead, groups says

Gun attacks were reported in some areas in Basilan since May 11 that already resulted in the death of seven people, a peace advocacy group monitoring the elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) reported on Monday, May 12.
In its report via the Critical Events Monitoring System (CEMS), the Climate Conflict Action Asia (CCAA)said the latest gun attack happened at around 2 a.m. on Monday in Hadji Muhtamad town.
It said three supporters of a mayoralty candidate died on the spot while several others were injured when their convoy was ambushed.
A day before, it said gunmen attacked a teacher acting as board of election inspector (BEI) in Barangay Sumagdang, Isabela City.
The teacher, who was assigned as BEI in Barangay Upper Manggas in Lantawan town, was wounded along with her husband.
The CCAA also reported the armed confrontation between two armed groups in Barangay Langil in Mohammad Ajul at around 2 p.m. on May 11.
“Initial reports indicate that one of the fatalities is the brother-in-law of a local political candidate, the group said.
The CCAA has recorded 237 deaths since the filing of certificate of candidacy in October last year, including 19 deaths since May 1 this year.
