Women’s rights advocates in Davao City have appealed to the government to protect women from exploitation and neglect.
Gabriela and Talikala made the appeal following an incident involving reelectionist Rep. Paolo Duterte in a bar in Davao City.
They called on authorities to launch a thorough investigation and hold Duterte “accountable for the exploitation of women,” particularly those who are driven into the sex trade by poverty and systemic neglect.
"This is the grim reality for over 2,000 prostituted women in Davao City, who are left with no choice but to enter the sex trade due to the rising cost of living, lack of jobs, and limited access to social services," said Dr. Jean Lindo, Gabriela party-list third nominee, in a statement.
"Instead of offering support as a sitting legislator, Duterte chose to abuse his position and prey on women’s vulnerabilities. These women are abused twice: First by a system that abandons them, and then by men who exploit their desperation," Lindo added.
Gabriela sought a “full, immediate, and impartial investigation” into the incident, including the broader allegations of prostitution and abuse. “Those found responsible must be held to account, regardless of their position or influence,” Gabriela Secretary General Clarice Palce said.
Talikala Inc. emphasized said that the incident indicates a broader, systematic trafficking network for prostitution, suggesting that these claims should serve as grounds for an extensive investigation.
Duterte said that the evidence submitted in the case filed against him by a businessman on Friday was fabricated.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) is set to evaluate the case.“An evaluation will be done and if the evidence is sufficient, a preliminary investigation will be conducted,” Prosecutor General Richard Anthony D. Fadullon said.
