Likha, an initiative dedicated to promoting and sustaining Philippine traditional textiles and crafts, returns for its third edition in June 2024. Building on the momentum of the first two Likha events, Likha 3 will gather a significantly larger group of artisans – 87 to be exact – from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The venue for this showcase will be the PICC Forum in Pasay City.
Likha began its journey in February 2023 with a gathering focused on Filipino weavers. The primary objective wasn't just showcasing their beautiful textiles but also forging connections between these artisans and skilled Filipino designers.
The success of Likha 1 fueled a desire for inclusivity. Likha 2, held in June 2023 to coincide with the 125th anniversary of Philippine independence, expanded beyond textiles to include artisans skilled in various crafts, showcasing Filipino craftsmanship diversity. The second iteration included pottery, wood and stone carving, embroidery, filigree, basketry, mat weaving, and shell craft.
Likha 3 will take this commitment to showcasing and nurturing Filipino craftsmanship a step further. Scheduled for June 6 to 11, 2024, the event will not only feature new artisans and a wider range of crafts but will also dedicate a special section to Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA) awardees. These esteemed individuals represent the pinnacle of Philippine craftsmanship, and their inclusion serves as a tribute to their invaluable contributions to the country's artistic heritage.
This celebration of Filipino craftsmanship extends beyond the physical display. Dama Ko, Lahi Ko (DKLK), Likha 3's storytelling partner for 2024, will arrange a series of talks centered around the theme "Sining ng Lahi, Yaman ng Bayan" (Art of the Ancestors, Wealth of the Nation). These talks aim to create a more cohesive narrative around the importance of cultural heritage and its legacy.
