The MPL Philippines Season 15 welcomed new teams and revamped squads in the opening week of the regular season but the usual powerhouses came out unscathed through the first three days of action at the Green Sun Hotel in Makati City.
Team Liquid PH and Aurora Gaming both swept their assignments to seize the early lead in the regular season standings with similar 2-0 slates.
The Cavalry started out the season strong, giving the new organizations a rude welcome to the MPL after taking down Team Falcons PH with a 2-0 victory and then clobbering Twisted Minds PH with another 2-0 triumph.
Through those wins, TLPH’s offseason acquisition in Kiel “Oheb” Soriano shone the brightest. He had a rousing debut against Team Falcons, scoring a Maniac on his Granger pick before dazzling on another impressive showing on the Harith the next game.
“Pagdating sa mga adjustment, hindi naman ako nahihirapan mag-adjust kasi kung ano yung playstyle ko sa dati kong team [Blacklist International] parang sobrang dali lang i-apply sa Team Liquid. Tapos yung play style din nila parang pasok din sa play style ko kaya parang nagsi-sync kami,” said Oheb.
As impressive as well was Aurora Gaming which handed Onic Philippines, the reigning World Champions, a shocking 2-1 defeat.
The Northern Lights hardly had any jitters as Renejay “RENEJAY” Barcase led the charge for the team that also opened the season in style with another 2-0 win over Twisted Mind.
Also turning heads in the opening week was the revamped TNC Pro Team which bounced back from an opening day loss to Onic Philippines by toppling the new-look APBren.
Omega, meanwhile, was the only other winless team, joining Twisted Minds and APBren after also dropping its game against Team Falcons PH.
The regular season resumes Friday, March 5, with the marquee collision between world champion caliber teams in Onic Philippines and Team Falcons PH.
