'Halloween scare' at NLEX as two coffins fall from delivery van

A macabre seen greeted motorists at the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) on Tuesday night, Jan. 21, when two coffins fell on the highway from a delivery van.

The two coffins greeted motorists at the NLEX viaduct near Pulilan, Bulacan around 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

The NLEX Corporate Communications (NLEXCC) said that at around 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, an FB-type vehicle carrying the coffins was traveling southbound at the Candaba 3rd Viaduct when the incident occurred. 

The NLEX-CC told the Manila Bulletin their traffic personnel immediately went onsite to clear the area. The driver of the FB-type vehicle later returned to claim the coffins and no traffic build-up was reported.

Motorists plying the southbound lane of the NLEX viaduct were surprised to see the two coffins blocking the expressway.  

Noel Luartes, one of the motorists, said the incident happened a few meters away from the Pulilan Exit. 

“Nagbe-brake na ‘yung mga sasakyan tapos tinitingnan namin bakit ba. Sabi po ng anak ko ‘may nalaglag daddy mukhang may nalaglag’ tapos pagdating namin doon sa area na ‘yon may ataol na may kabaong na doon. Vinideohan na ng anak ko (The vehicles ahead of us were pulling a stop and we were wondering why. My child said it looked like something fell on the highway and when we looked, the coffins were there),” said Luartes. 

Bulacan media men learned that the coffins had fallen from a closed van coming from Pampanga. The coffins were to be delivered to Marikina City.

A driver of an SUV said he was following the closed van when the coffin fell from it, barely missing his vehicle. But when the second coffin fell, it reportedly hit the SUV's grille.
