Criminology graduate stabbed, beaten to death after being mistaken for thief

A 26-year-old criminology graduate from Samar was stabbed and beaten to death after being wrongly accused of theft in Barangay 718, Malate, Manila.

According to the Manila Police District (MPD), the incident occured on Feb. 8, at about 11 p.m., in a house at 2288 Int. 29 Leveriza St., Barangay 718, Malate, Manila.

The victim was identified as Christian Ambon.

Initial investigation showed Ambon had just arrived in Manila to look for a job when his cellphone was robbed.

While chasing the snatcher, someone shouted “Magnanakaw! (thief!)" which led to Ambon being mistakenly accused as the culprit.

He was then attacked by bystanders in the area.

The victim was later found shirtless with a stab wound and was rushed to the hospital.

He died on Thursday, Feb 20, due to his injuries.

Before passing, he told his mother what happened and identified the thief as "Junjun."

Ambon’s mother also claimed someone heard the barangay captain allegedly instructing people to throw Ambon's body into a river, which the captain denied.

The official also claimed Ambon attacked first with a knife, leading to the fight, and said that there is no one living in their barangay with the name "Junjun."

Despite being the victim, Ambon was charged with trespassing and attempted murder before his death.

Ambon's family is seeking justice for his death and hopes to bring his body back to Samar. However, they do not have the means to bring his body home.

The Manila Police District (MPD) is currently investigating the incident.
