Vacant house collapses in Manila after heavy rains

A two-story wooden structure that had been left vacant collapsed in Sta. Cruz, Manila, on Monday evening, Aug. 31, following heavy rainfall that weakened the already deteriorated building.

The structure, located at a property along Tayuman Street in Barangay 353, collapsed at around 6:45 p.m., according to the Manila Police District (MPD).

Police identified the owner as 75-year-old Yolanda Lising, a resident of Quezon City.

The building, made of wood and galvanized light materials, was no longer occupied when it collapsed.

Police said the structure had already deteriorated and became weakened and structurally unstable following the previous heavy rainfall.

No one was reported injured in the incident.

The damage was estimated at around P50,000.

During the investigation, Lising reportedly told authorities that the structure had already been scheduled for urgent demolition and renovation.

Barangay 353 officials, led by Barangay Chairwoman Angelina Suansing Gorospe, were also at the site and advised to coordinate with the Manila City Hall Engineering Office for a structural assessment.
