Several areas in Luzon recorded nearly three times their normal rainfall in August as heavy rains from the southwest monsoon or “habagat” contributed to unusually high monthly rainfall totals, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
PAGASA weather specialist Benison Estareja said during a press conference on Tuesday, Sept. 1, that La Trinidad, Benguet recorded the highest accumulated rainfall in August at 2,868.7 millimeters from Aug. 1 to 31.
The amount was equivalent to 298 percent of the station’s normal August rainfall of 963.3 millimeters.
“Halos pang tatlong buwan na ulan yung inulan po sa La Trinidad Benguet for the month of August 2026 (La Trinidad, Benguet received nearly three months’ worth of rain in August 2026),” Estareja said.
Iba, Zambales followed with 2,630 millimeters of rainfall from Aug. 1 to 31, equivalent to 284 percent of its normal August rainfall.
Baguio City recorded 2,626.26 millimeters of rainfall for the month, compared with its normal August rainfall of 963.2 millimeters. This was equivalent to 273 percent of normal.
The figures showed that Iba and Baguio City also received nearly three times their normal August rainfall, Estareja said.
Abucay, Bataan recorded 2,210 millimeters of rainfall, placing it among the top five stations with the highest rainfall totals for August.
However, no comparison with its normal August rainfall was available because it is a new PAGASA station.
Olongapo City, meanwhile, logged 2,100 millimeters, or 243 percent of its normal August rainfall.
Although not part of the top five, the PAGASA Science Garden monitoring station in Quezon City also recorded a significant amount of rainfall at 1,510 millimeters for the month.
This was equivalent to 266 percent of its normal August rainfall of 568.5 millimeters.
“Nakakontribute po yung ganito karaming ulan na 1,500 millimeters nung August 8, nung August 17, nung August 29 (The rainfall amounting to 1,500 millimeters was contributed by the rains on Aug. 8, Aug. 17, and Aug. 29),” he said.
